Dentists and suicide rate?

Question by Picture Taker: Dentists and suicide rate?
You know, I have heard all my life about dentists being at such risk for commiting suicide, but I also keep hearing that it’s a myth. I’ve just done a few searches for “dentist suicide,” “dentist suicide rate,” and “dentist suicide statistics,” and I’m just not finding anything relevant.

Can someone actually cite a study – even ONE study – or provide me with a link that supports the popular claim that dentists have a high risk of suicide?

Thanks.
Yes, I am a dentist and, _NO_, I am not contemplating suicide. It’s just a question that keeps coming up here and I’d like to debunk what I believe to be a myth. I can’t find anything to support this statement and I was hoping that nobody else could either so we could put the myth to rest.
I asked the same question in the “Mental Health” section and got a couple of very good answers and one OUTSTANDING answer that says it’s more or less a myth. It’s a journal abstract (JADA) and not someone’s personal opinion. Go check it out.

Huh? I’ve never heard of such a thing. Gotta be some myth. In fact, a myth implies something huge. This isn’t even a tabloid factoid. Why on earth would dentists want to kill themselves more than other doctors? Makes no sense.

What do you think? Answer below!

How To Find A Good And Reputable Dentist Seattle

If you’re in need of a dentist, one of your first concerns is likely how to find a good and reputable dentist, especially if you suffer from dental fear. Finding just the right dentist can make all the difference in receiving comfortable dental care. This article looks at several ways to find a good and reputable dentist in Seattle, including checking out dental association websites, getting recommendations from family and friends, viewing websites where patients rate their dentist, and making a visit to your local neighborhood dentists.

Dental Association Websites

Checking out dental association websites is a great place to begin your search for a good and reputable dentist. You can search your state and local area and some websites even provide information like where a prospective dentist went to school, their years of experience, and other information that will be helpful to you in building a list of potential dentists.

Recommendations From Family And Friends

Another great way to find prospective dentists is simply asking your family members and friends for a recommendation. As your family and friends share their experiences with you, you’ll learn a lot about how a prospective dentist treats patients. While knowing a dentist’s education and years of experience is important, knowing how they deal and interact with patients is critical, especially if you suffer from dental fear. You may not get the same great feeling from a dentist as your friend or family member does, but getting recommendations is still one of the fastest and easiest ways to build a list of potential dentists.

Rate Your Dentist Websites

After visiting dental association websites and getting recommendations from family and friends, you’ve likely compiled a good list of prospective dentists. Now it’s time to see how they rate with patients you don’t know. Search Google for a term like ‘rate a dentist Seattle’ and you’ll see a number of websites pop up where patients rate their dentist and offer comments. While you can’t always trust these reviews as honest just as you can’t be sure online customer product reviews are genuine, they can give you a more confident feeling about some dentists over others.

Visit The Prospective Dentists On Your List

After narrowing your list down based on association websites, friend and family recommendations, and online patient ratings, it’s time to visit the remaining dentists on your list. Call to schedule a time to come in just to meet and talk to the dentists on your list or just show up to schedule a conference to see how the staff interacts with you in person. If the staff treats you like you’re crazy for wanting to meet and greet a dentist before making an actual dental appointment, move on to the next dentist on your list. Taking the time to make sure you’re comfortable should be high on the list of any dental office, even if you’re not a patient yet. If they won’t accommodate you interviewing the dentist beforehand, they won’t likely accommodate you with special care if you suffer from dental fear.

There are many ways to find a good and reputable dentist. The best way is to follow the steps in this article and then go with your gut feeling about a dentist when making your final choice.
