Question by Mo: Do I need braces? How do I convince my mom?
I have no photos, but my bottom teeth have moved over the past few months. It seems as if my jaw isn't big enough and the teeth are starting overlapping each other. Please don't answer with "ask you dentist" because my mom doesn't trust dentists. Oh yea, and how do I convince my mom if I do? As I said before, she's sort of anti-dentist/orthodontists.

  1. Mrs.R says:

Tell her that it is very important to you and that it may help your self image. If you express your reasons for why you think you need them why you want them average cost local dentist & orthodontist, and have all your rebutles lined up you should be fine

  2. licht says:

yes!! believe me, you'll regret it later.

yes, they are a pain for 1-2 years, but then again, its only 1-2 years.

  3. businessman says:

start to chew something infront of her and show here how ypour teeth are overlaping and crowding, by the braces are a pain u dont want them.

  4. Sarah says:

My moms the same way i asked her and the dentist even told her i need braces so we are makng a deal and I might get them by next year

  5. Joselyn says:

Sounds like you have it tough. If you don't get braces and your teeth are bunched up it's possible to rot out your teeth cause food can get stuck in hard to reach spots.

  6. fun luvr! says:

say "mom whether u want me 2 fix my teeth or not affects my appearance for the rest of my life. do u want me 2 regret not getting orthodonticl(sp.) work done?" guilt trip should work. or approach it in an adult way.

  7. Amanda S says:

Well, for one thing, having a beautiful smile will last you a lifetime. And believe it or not, having straight teeth is healthier. With straight teeth, you can chew better therefore making it easier to digest food. So do tell your mom that. Also tell her that there are ways that it can be cheaper. Good luck.

  8. marci knows best says:

Go to a trusted adult who she might listen to, her friend or maybe your aunt and discuss this with them. It does sound as if you will need braces, but she may be more likely to listen to another adult than to you.

  9. ASDZA’NI says:

Sounds like she just doesn't want the cost of the dentist or orthodontist.
You'll just have to have your dentist show her the x-rays and explain why you need them and what will happen if you don't.

it seems like you should get braces

i had braces and i kinda had the same problem

and to convice your mom, tell her that its very important to have straight teeth in this day in age and come on everyone has braces so i dont think its taking a risk getting braces, but if you do go look in to it a little bit and go to a good place

    hope that helps

  11. tai watson says:

Perhaps showing her your teeth and the way they're beginning to shift into may help. & also, letting her know that having good teeth means a lot to you may also work.

Most parents have trouble making sure their children have nice teeth, but in your case it seems to be the other way around, lol.

  12. JENNA says:

tell her your teeth are hurting bad. it sounds like your molars are moving or growing or even your wisdom teeth

  13. xohopexo says:

well, i had braces and will soon be getting a second phase (braces again) but I'm no ortho or dentist but i will try to help. If you cant see your bottom teeth too much i wouldnt worry. If you can, tell her people say stuff (even if they dont.) I had a pallet expander which actually pushes your pallet further apart and sits there until the bone grows in. Sounds like it hurts but it doesnt at all. I gave you my ortho's website as my source...it might say something.

  14. George says:

Well, if your teeth are really as you say they are, then yes, you should definitely see an orthodontist as soon as possible. It'll be a lot harder to fix if you try and do it later, or, it could become impossible. I suggest confronting your mom. If you keep asking, eventually she'll give in. Hope this helped!

  15. Lapis9Lazuli666 says:

My mom would not endorse me in paying for my braces neither did my dad. They both refused to pay for my braces. So, guess what I did ?

I waited patiently until I reached 19 years of age and I became a waitress as a College and University student so I could pay for my own braces on my own dime since my parents refused to pay.

Braces are freaking expensive and if you want them that much, you pay for them your self. After my braces were removed at the age of 22 years old, people started complimenting me on my smile instead of insulting me because before my braces, I looked like I was angry all the time because I had an underbite. Can you imagine how it feels to have people constantly ask you if you are in a bad mood because you have an underbite.

Today, I am 44 years old and my smile is my ticket to freedom. I have a gorgeous smile because I dared work for my braces since my mom refused to pay for them.
The sad part of growing up is that you have to learn to become your own care giver as well financiallly.
I babysat for $ 2 an hour for years so one day I could also have braces to correct the teeth in my mouth.

You hold a lot a power in the adult world if your teeth are straight. Rich people have straight teeth and poor people have to earn their way to straight teeth.
My straight teeth is my ticket to getting respect because if I can take care of what is in my mouth, I can show that I care about me.

You are young and you have many years ahead of you to get those braces. I know of many who are in their Forties and Fifties and they are getting braces that late in life because it is never too late to do the right thing with your body and your teeth.
