Many dog owners aren’t aware that their dogs need dental care just like we do and mistakenly believe that bad odor is normal to dogs, often referring to it as “doggie breath”. It doesn’t occur to some dog owners that they too would have bad breath if they never cleaned their teeth! Many people neglect their dog’s dental hygiene and this eventually results in many problems.

Dogs can develop cavities and gum disease just like humans, and when this happens they are in considerable pain but can’t vocalize about it. If this goes on unnoticed by the owner, the dog’s teeth will eventually decay and fall out. Diseased gums can cause even more serious problems such as kidney and liver failure when bacteria enter the system through the gums. Teeth and gums in poor condition can even lead to heart failure if left untreated. As you can see poor dental hygiene can result in serious health conditions as well as death so keeping your dog’s teeth clean is vital if you want your dog to be as healthy as he can be.

Checking your dog’s teeth on a regular basis and cleaning them should prevent any problems from developing. Red and swollen gums are always a sign that something is wrong. Dogs with painful gums or decayed teeth will find it difficult to eat and f you see any of these signs in your dog you should take him to the vet immediately.

Plaque develops from bits of food stuck to the teeth and it develops in to tartar within a few hours and this is why it is crucial to clean your dog’s teeth every day. Once tartar develops the dog will need a professional cleaning at the vet’s clinic as tartar can’t be removed by brushing.

Prevention is the best cure and getting your dog used to regular brushing is a good idea. If you own an older dog who has never had his teeth brushed then don’t fret as any dog can become used to having his teeth cleaned. An older dog may require a professional cleaning as he may already have plaque and tartar build up.

Human toothpaste can cause your dog to become seriously sick so be sure to only use toothpaste that is specially formulated for dogs. Doggie toothpaste is designed not only to be safe for use on dogs; it is also made to be palatable and therefore more readily accepted by them.

The first step to getting your dog familiarized with brushing is to allow him to smell and taste the toothpaste by putting a little on your finger and allowing him to sniff it. Slowly put your finger into his mouth and gently massage his teeth and gums. Once he accepts this it is time to get him introduced to the toothbrush. Put a small amount of toothpaste on the brush and allow him to inspect it. Gently start brushing the front teeth for a few seconds and then praise the dog profusely. Gradually increase brushing time day by day until it becomes an accepted part of your dog’s routine grooming.

Providing your dog with crunchy food and chews can also help in keeping your dog’s teeth clean so make sure you do that as well.
