Question by Seeker2008: Is it okay to brush with pure baking soda once a week?
I use Sensodyne Pronamel toothpaste, which I know kind of builds up the enamel and protects against acid wear and such. I am aware that baking soda itself is very abrasive if you brushed with this something like a few times a week, and that it can wear away enamel. How quickly does this enamel establish itself again? I would think that the toothpaste I am using would help protect against cavities even if the enamel did wear away a little bit, in that the toothpaste provides a covering every time I brush my teeth (usually 3 times per day – sonic toothbrush).

But is once a week okay? I am an Invisalign patient and basically my teeth tend to get a little more on the tan-yellowish side having trays in all day long. It’s not from food or tarter stuck on them…I think it’s just stains in general that are hard to get out. I do not want to try the “whitening” products of all sorts, some of which I have read horror stories about them burning people’s gums even at the dentist.

I would basically make a water and paste thick mixture of baking soda and brush directly with that. Okay to do once a week?
