Dentistry is both an enjoyable and rewarding career. A dentist is a medical professional who treats patients for wide variety of dental issues such as cleaning teeth, providing fillings, bleaching teeth, and counseling patients on proper dental care and oral disease prevention. The path to becoming a dentist involves extensive education.
The following is a guide on how to become a dentist in Canada:
1. When you embark on your career path to becoming a dentist, you will first have to complete an undergraduate degree from university. A Bachelor’s degree in the area of science is the normal education path. It is mandated that you complete a Bachelor’s degree before you can attend a school of Dentistry in Canada.
2. Once you have completed an undergraduate degree, you must then apply to a Canadian School of Dentistry. The dentistry program is a four year program. During this time, you will be able to select to specialize in a particular field of dentistry or become a general family dentist. Dentistry specializations can include pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, dental surgery, periodontics, and much more.
3. While in dental school, you will take a number of courses such as dental radiography, oral surgery, preventive dentistry, microbiology, endodontics, anesthesia physiology, oral health, periodontics, dental neuroscience, orthodontics…etc. As well, there will be a number of laboratory classes. Dentistry students will also be able to treat real patients where they will be graded.
4. When one graduates, they will receive a degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM).
5. To be able to work as a dentist in Canada, one must pass an exam given by Canada’s National Dental Examination Board. One will then have to register with the Royal College of Dentists in the area of Canada that they will be practicing.
Personal attributes dentists must have include: good manual skills, good manual dexterity, good judgment skills, patience, a good depth perception, communication skills, a good head for business, and be friendly and outgoing with patients.
The function of a dentist in private practice is not just to provide dental care to their patients, but they also perform such tasks as managing the dental business which includes inventory management and financial management. People who work for dentists include receptionists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and dental laboratory techs. Those who choose to specialize have a number of choices but some of the more popular areas include: Orthodontists will straighten teeth by adding pressure to the teeth with retainers or braces. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons operate on the jaw and mouth. Pediatric dentists are also popular. They specialize in treating children and often have practices for children only. Prosthodontists are involved in replacing missing teeth with such medical devices as crowns, bridges, and dentures. Endodontists perform root canal therapy. Oral and maxillofacial radiologists diagnose diseases in the head and neck by using imaging technology.
Dentistry is a career that is in great demand. If you love science, anatomy, and working with the public, working in dentistry may be the health career for you.
Teeth whitening Toronto is an inexpensive way to brighten and enhance your smile dramatically. Cosmetic dentist Toronto offers various tooth whitening options to help you achieve the look that you want.
Yes, indeed this statement is true. Cosmetic teeth whitening has not only become affordable but also highly sought after as a beautifying treatment. Cosmetic dentistry a few decades ago was the domain of only high-end customers – for whom a few thousand dollars would not create a dent in their balance.
By and by with the advancement of technology and rising competition the cost of cosmetic dentistry has gradually become affordable. It has now come within the reach of the common man. It is possible today to address many issues that before were not possible, difficult or highly unaffordable. One can straighten out teeth, whiten them, improve the gum line, fill in and align them – you can have a complete work over without really blowing a hole in your pocket.
Among all these procedures, the fastest way to improve your looks and one of the most affordable of all is the whitening teeth process.
What Is Teeth Whitening Process?
The teeth whitening process is the method by which all the stains that have accumulated over the teeth over a period of time, are removed. When this is done, the smile not only becomes more confident (since the person knows that it looks good), but also highly attractive which adds to the overall appearance and personality of the person.
The dark spots or discoloration of the teeth is the result of many factors, i.e. age, eating habits, smoking, drinking coffee, tea or cola, etc. These stains could be removed in one sitting through acidic-micro-abrasion scrubs performed by the dentist, which are not only highly effective but also extremely affordable.
Overall teeth whitening process is done best in the office of the dentist. It is usually recommended that the first time may be done with a dentist, as the latter would be able to discover and repair any flaws that would be aggravated by the application of the bleaching agents found in the whitening formulas.
The dentists sometimes offer special teeth whitening kits which are more potent and safe than those available in the market. The kits could be used at home at your convenience with the assurance and approval of the dentist. These kits usually come with special protectors for the gums so the soft tissue is spared the impact of the bleach. If you do not get a bleaching kit from your dentist, you should go for the best possible brands available in your area.
Another point that you should be extremely careful about is that you follow the instructions to the T. Many people complain of mild to extreme side effects following the use of Do It Yourself kits. However, the root cause of the problem, most often than not lies in the fact that the instructions were not carried out as indicated.
Methods Of Saving On Cosmetic Dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry might not as expensive as it was one upon a time; however, it is still on the higher side, though one can afford it if you make the effort. The medical insurance providers are still not covering cosmetic dental procedures. However, there are dental plans which can provide you anything between 10 to 60% off the total cost. On an average the dental plans offer 20% off. These dental plans are offered by a network of dental clinics and you could avail of these through the recommendation of your doctor or a member of the network.
The good news is that these dental plans not only cover cosmetic surgery but also other related costs, such as x-rays, extractions, filling of cavities, bridge work, dentures, etc.

Cosmetic Teeth Whitening –Easiest way to Become Show Stopper
While all of us love to flash a pearly smile, it is also true that we keep putting off visiting a dentist. Blame it on busy schedule or the fear of the dental chair but we usually don’t make an appointment with a teeth whitening dentist until the fellow with yellow grin in the mirror starts to bother us big time. Designer wear and custom made jewellery loses its glamour unless you have a shiny smile to match it. Whiter teeth not only make you look healthy and attractive but also make you feel confident enough to smile more often. Often a pearly smile takes the focus away from the lines around out mouth and gives you a more youthful appearance.
Cosmetic teeth whitening is a short and completely painless procedure favoured by millions of people across the world looking to make their smiles more attractive. Teeth whitening take only few minutes and it gives you shiny bright teeth that can dramatically improve your looks. Tooth whitening is a completely safe procedure with no side effects. It is not a permanent solution and results can last from a couple of years. In fact, it depends entirely on your eating habits and your oral hygiene routine to make the effects of dental teeth whitening last longer. Cigarettes, coffee, tea and colas are most damaging closely followed by Red wine, chocolates and other dark coloured foods and beverages. Brushing your teeth twice a day and rinsing it after every meal goes a long way in maintaining the effect of teeth whitening.
Tooth whitening dentistry is the best and safest option to get healthier and whiter teeth. However, to achieve expected results, you must seek the consultation of only a certified dentist with years of experience. Cosmetic Dentist Deerfield San Antonio – Cosmetic Dentist SA TX
Cosmetic Dentist for Deerfield San Antonio TX – Calming a Parent Worried About Teeth Braces for Children
It’s generally accepted that a smile is the most universal greeting for anyone you meet in the entire world. International advertisers such as Coca-Cola had a slogan in 1979: “Have a Coke and a smile” and McDonalds had one in 2000: “We love to see you smile.”
As a cosmetic dentist for the Deerfield San Antonio Texas area, a lot of parents in the neighborhood ask me about their children’s teeth and whether they should get braces for their teeth and what kind is best.
In these consultations with parents, it’s apparent that they are worried about this dilemma and they realize that it’s advisable many times from a cosmetic dentistry standpoint to have their children’s teeth corrected with some form of teeth braces. More importantly, parents want what’s best for their children to have all the advantages to grow up with a fair chance to succeed in the world as we know it today.
Over my 30 years of practice, I’ve watched how children are expected to be better and better compared to other children. The children feel the pressure from their peers. Their parents feel the pressure from other parents. It’s part of a society game of who is going to be better than someone else, and by how much. So naturally, straight teeth and a beautiful smile eventually get put into the equation for this “excellence standard.”
There are many aspects of how a child grows up to be a “successful” personality. From a cosmetic dentistry standpoint, I can tell you what I have observed over the years about straight teeth and beautiful smile makeovers for children or adults. There is a direct correlation to a person’s self esteem and their beautiful smile with straight teeth. Period. When our patients finish their cosmetic dental program, they report that they feel transformed to an area of “perfection” – at least with their smile.
This goes a long way when people are trying to get noticed, get liked, get attention, and so on as they are interacting with others in their life, whether it’s for personal or business reasons.
For all these important reasons, I like to spend time with a person when they come to me to discuss the very important subject of teeth and beautiful smiles. It is critical to the patient to get everything discussed and all their questions answered. And this has to be done correctly from the beginning.
To make sure this is done correctly, I offer a no-obligation consultation to every new patient who comes to see me.

Top Cosmetic Dentist of San Antonio TX – Gives Expert Advice on Beautiful Smiles
What Can a Beautiful Smile Do For You?
At Cosmetic Dentistry of San Antonio, people ask us this question quite frequently. But you are the only one who can ultimately answer that question. Chances are since you are reading this, you have some considerations about your smile. If your smile has flaws, even minor ones, it can have a negative effect on the way you see yourself.
Don’t always rely on your cosmetic dentist to answer this question for you. Instead, you might ask yourself, what might you do if you had more confidence? How would you handle life if you felt better about yourself? How would you feel in social settings if you could freely communicate and laugh without having any attention on your smile or your teeth?
Studies reveal that over 85% of adults say they remember someone with an attractive smile and an astounding 74% think that an unattractive smile can hurt career opportunities. A better smile can give you the confidence boost to pursue things that you might not otherwise. This can translate into more opportunities that could lead to a better job, more friends or perhaps a spouse. Over 90% of adults say that an attractive smile is an important social issue.
Unfortunately, you probably will never know if you get turned down for a job or perhaps even a date due to your unattractive smile, because in our society no one would ever tell you for fear of hurting your feelings.
I wish it weren’t true but we live in a society where first impressions are crucial. If you have attention on your teeth, even just a little, this introverts you and makes you self-conscious. This will hold you back. It will hinder your communication, how often and how big you smile. Isn’t it time to do something about it? We can help you get the smile you have always wanted and deserve. An investment in yourself is the best investment you will ever make. When you are happy and confident it has a positive effect on those around you.
So if I can give you more direction on this quest for a beautiful smile, keep in mind that at Cosmetic Dentistry of San Antonio we have a truly a state of the art office, and our cosmetic dentist, Dr. Edward Camacho has helped thousands of patients in San Antonio throughout his 30 years of practicing dentistry to achieve their ideal smile. Question by babyrko: How do i become a dental Hygienist/what major?
ok! I NEED HELP/ANSWERS …
i am a high school senior in Maryland, and i want to be a dental hygienist, but i don’t want to only get my associates i want to get my bachelors degree!
so i want to go to a community college first “Montgomery college” but the problem is i dont know what major i have to be in…i chose pre-dentistry just because i had to turn it in.
what would the major be called?
***For the next 2 yrs or so after community college i might move to california…what are some things i have to worry about?***
Best answer:
Answer by PooPooLaTrash You need to speak with a counselor at the school, tell him or her what your goal is, and they will be able to advise you on course selection and major.
Moving to California from Maryland? Get ready for sticker shock. Things are going to be much more expensive, although salaries are higher. First research where you want to live, then look online at sites like apartmentratings.com to get an idea of what your rent is going to be and which areas to avoid. There are some great things about California…the weather, and the people are generally very cool and don’t get in your business as long as you’re not doing anything to hurt them. Also, getting a job in the healthcare field probably won’t be difficult, but do check out your options before you make the leap. It’s not like you’re moving to a neighboring state…you’ll be moving 3000 miles away.

Being a doctor or a dentist is a blessing. Not every human will get that opportunity to serve the people. Serving human is the biggest service. It is a very dignified profession and requires a lot of patience and understanding. I will not say that all those who come to learn medicine or dentistry are born with that patience but they develop it while they learn the importance of it in their profession. Dental care facilities have become very costly and so they are simply beyond the reach of the ordinary citizen. Investing in a good insurance plan is an effective way to get access to quality dental care facilities without having to shell a lot of money. However, if you do not have dental insurance coverage you may have to search for alternatives. There are several ways to save on dental health-care costs. Getting dental procedures done at a dentistry school is one of the best ways to save money and at the same time get quality healthcare.
Dental schools perform procedures for a fraction of the cost that dentists charge. Usually, the margin is more than 50%. Many dental colleges perform procedures free of cost. However, you may have to bear the cost of screening procedures and medicines. But you can still save a lot of money by getting the procedure done at a college. Colleges do procedures for free or reduced prices to demonstrate them to dental students. In certain cases, you may have to undergo the procedure for the hands of a training dentist.
Apart from saving money the other advantage of getting the procedure done at a dentistry school is that you will be in safe and experienced hands. Professors working at dental colleges have many years of experience in the field. In fact, many of them are pioneers in the field. For this reason, you can rest assured that you will be in safe hands. The quality you can expect at a dentistry college cannot be found even at the best dental clinics outside. Even when a dental student is performing the procedure, it will still be supervised by someone experienced in the field and so you don’t have anything to fear.
You can expect better services because many dental trainees are very enthusiastic about doing the procedures. Students take a lot of interest and so you will get better services even when compared to an established dentist. However, there is some element of risk associated with it. Students can make mistakes. However, the chances are very low because there will always be an experienced professor supervising dental procedure. If something goes wrong, he will immediately rectify it without any problem.
If you want to get dental procedures at the college, you will have to contact the college directly. Just call their office and inquire if any such opportunities exist. There may be certain paper work involved — you may have to sign certain forms and agreements. For this reason, it may take some time. You have to start early so that you can get the procedures done as soon as possible.
