so, i had a root canal about a year ago. i went to this chop shop of a dentist, “western dental” and they did a horrible job. it took them 5 tries or so to measure the roots, which was uncomforitable and made me feel eery about the job they will do. apparently they must not have killed all the roots becuase the tooth is hurting again. arent they supposed to kill all the roots so it does not get infected again? i figured that is the case, so given that it is hurting again, it must be because of their horrible job. all i know is another root canal costs like 2000 dollars that i dont have and i feel it is unfair given the fact it is becuase i went to a crappy dentist. can i sue for the money to get another root canal?

Question by Dawn: Root canal vs. Extraction?
Just got the bad news. Tooth #2 (top, back right molar-not a wisdom) needs attention.

I have no dental insurance. I got an estimate of $ 1000 Root Canal from a specialist & a crown from my regular dentist is $ 800.

Extraction is $ 350 but I am so scared of teeth shifting & the dentist said my roots look really squirrely.

I would appreciate any info on pros & cons of each procedure, personal stories. ALSO – Is there a “plan” where I can join & receive a discount for the root canal? I live in South Central Florida.

The pain has been unbareable for just under a week now. I have been taking Ibuprofen & Tylenol, but I don’t think they are working anymore. Any suggestions?

I saw a different dentist about a month ago (the one who did the root canal is no longer practicing). She suggested a second root canal. I told her I felt like the tooth was loose and should I have it extracted? She says no, schedule a root canal. Well, before I can even make it to the appt the whole tooth has fallen out!! She has not returned my “emergency” call. There was some bleeding but not really pain, it feels creepy though! Should I be getting an antibiotic? Should I trust my dentist????

It happens all the time. A root canaled tooth is not as strong as it originally was so it has the potential to become brittle. You may have to have it extracted due to it’s size and strength.
You need to see an Endodontist not a dentist, they specialize in root canals. Regular dentists do a multitude of services, Endo do ONLY root canals. It is always best to go to a specialist. The Endo will evaluate the tooth and tell you what to do from there. He may send you to a Oral Surgeon or a Periodontist for evaluation if he can not repair it.
