Orange County Dentist Have Your Wisdom Third Molars Developed

The teeth that grow at the very back of the mouth between the ages of 18 and 25 years are called wisdom teeth or third molars. They are the last of the adult permanent teeth to develop.

Wisdom teeth can be a pain. Most of us do not have room for them and end up having them removed.Wisdom teeth do not always cause complications or pain, but because many people have too little space in their jaw, they sometimes grow at an angle, pushing on, or getting stuck against, other teeth.

The usefulness of wisdom teeth can be felt if they grow properly. Just like other teeth, if cleaned and maintained well, they will give you service for the rest of your life. This teeth may never grow at all but sometimes they come through part-way because of lack of space and again, they are the last teeth to develop. A case like this is known as impacted wisdom teeth.

Problems that can be linked with wisdom teeth are,

Decay. Since they are hard to clean, decaying occurs. As much as you would want them repaired, they are not accessible.

Infection. Infections are common with impacted wisdom teeth because of the flap of gum over the back and could lead to acute flare-ups. Swelling occurs to the area near the glands under the jaw and also to the cheeks.

Tooth crowding. Other teeth move forward because they are pushed by third molars and some dentists advice extraction to avoid crowding and unwanted teeth movement.

Third molars can be extracted,

1. Because the impacted teeth have shown potential danger if not removed. Infections could a potential danger due to the inaccessibility during brushing and flossing and as a result food is trapped easily behind the wisdom teeth. Frequent pain caused by this infections is immense and could cause harm.
2. Crowding and misalignment causing teeth to rub against cheek and tongue causing pain.

Even before problems begin, your dentist might suggest extraction of wisdom teeth. In order to stop pain or complications that you will have to go through when you are older.

In case you are not sure about any suggested treatment, seek for a second opinion. The decision is entirely yours and can only be made when you are well aware of what you are getting into. Should the tooth be pressing the surrounding gum, a simple procedure of cutting back the gum can be performed. Where surgery is not necessary, make sure you have dental check ups always to avoid problems in future.

Impacted wisdom teeth are normally removed in a dental surgery under local anesthetic but sometimes general anesthetic will be needed. To experience less anxiety, some local anesthesia and a little sedation will help.

How To Find The Best Dentist Bucks County PA

How To Find The Best Dentist Bucks County PA

How to Choose a Bucks County PA Dentist

Finding a highly qualified dentist in Bucks County PA for you and your family can be rather stressful. It is important to find someone who is skillful in all aspects of dentistry because your needs are different from that of your kids. That’s why learning everything about your preferred dental care practitioners is crucial before seeking treatment. Don’t be shy in asking his or her qualifications, experience, and specialties.

The Educational Qualifications of Dentists

To be called a Bucks County dentist, a person must have a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree. Dentistry practitioners also need to have at least two years of pre-dental college experience followed by four years of dental studies. Nearly all students who decide to enroll in a dentistry course have a bachelor’s degree.

Students of dentistry spend the first two years of dental school studying preclinical sciences, the basics of dentistry, and the different procedures. The next two years involves having a more practical experience under the direct supervision of a faculty member. It doesn’t stop there. Any aspiring dental care practitioner needs to pass a state and national board examination to practice in his chosen area.

Similar to physicians, there are also many fields of specialties in dentistry. Those who are interested in a certain field need to undergo two or more years of advanced studies. After this, the board examination administered by the American Dental Association needs to be passed. The eight recognized fields of study include:

• Dental public health – control and prevention of dental diseases and the promotion of dental health in the community
• Pediatric dentistry – the dental care for infants and kids
• Endodontics – focuses on the treatment and prevention of diseases of the root pulp and root canal therapy
• Oral and maxillofacial surgery – surgical treatment for injuries, diseases, and defects on the mouth, face and jaw; also include tooth extractions
• Oral and maxillofacial pathology – the diagnosis of tumors and injuries to the head and neck
• Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics – the correction of facial and tooth irregularities
• Periodontics – treatment of diseases on the gum and related structures
• Prosthodontics – correction of oral dysfunctions including the use of devices such as bridges, crowns, and dentures

If you need to have a sensitive procedure done, determine the field of specialty of your Bucks County PA dentist before proceeding. Those who are highly trained in a certain field are more likely to produce the best results possible. However, even if your favored dentist did not take up your preferred specialty, don’t discount their experience. Many have undertaken these procedures on a number of patients and are well-qualified to treat your specific case. After they get these qualifications, they may be eligible to perform cosmetic dentistry as well as dental implants.

Once you are aware of the educational qualifications of your dentist in Bucks County PA, there are other things to look into. Just because a practitioner excelled academically does not immediately mean that he will do just as well professionally. Look at the positive and negative signs:

Positive Signs

The best Bucks County dentists are those who are genuinely concerned about the well-being of their patients. They are detail-oriented and provide comprehensive dental treatment. If the patient is suffering from an unusual condition, they will recommend a full-mouth study including x-rays unless suitable films are available from the patient’s old dentist.

A complete mouth inspection involves examining the gums, teeth, tongue, lips, palate, the inside of your cheeks, and even the skin on the face and neck. The Bucks County dentists will also feel for abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland or lymph node. All findings will be charted in detail for reference later on. Even if you don’t have any specific problem, a visit to the dentist can yield a lot of benefits. It will also let you know if there are risks in taking cosmetic dentistry if you are so inclined.

Regular check-ups can prevent problems from getting worse. Bite evaluations, tooth cleaning, fluoride treatments, and early interventions can help you avoid costly dental treatments later on. The frequency of testing and maintenance care is dependent on the recommendations of the dentist. It will be based on the condition of your gums, cavity formation, and the rate of calculus formation. Any individual issue will be addressed as well. Good dentists doesn’t stop there, they also place patients on a recall schedule for continual maintenance.

The true test of the dentist’s ability is in his work. When high-quality treatment is given, it should last for a very long time, even for a lifetime. On the other hand, if you are unfortunate enough to encounter a bad dentist, his work will get damaged or decay in a few years’ time. You may need to undergo additional treatment to fix the previous dentist’s mistakes.

High-quality cosmetic dentistry is not done mechanically in an assembly-like style. Rather, it requires an individual approach and meticulous attention to detail. Patients have different needs and no two set of teeth are the same. Every little dental problem can multiply tenfold if it is not treated properly. When the dentist recommends a sensitive procedure, try to have a clear understanding of what it entails.

Know the benefits, risks, and process that will be used for the treatment, whether it is about getting a cosmetic dentistry treatment or getting emergency dental care. It might be a good idea to ask for alternative treatment options as well. There might be several ways to accomplish the same goal. The difference lies in its advantages, disadvantages, and costs.

Negative Signs

Compelling advertising does not necessarily translate to high-quality service. Some of the best Bucks County PA dentists don’t even advertise because they have a steady stream of patients. Also, mass advertising means that the dental clinic you’re interested in may be more into quantity rather than the quality of procedures done.

There are also dentists in Bucks County that put an emphasis on one-time cosmetic dentistry. While this isn’t bad by itself depending on the procedure, it should serve as a warning sign that the dental practitioner isn’t into long term maintenance care. He or she prefers comprehensive one-time solutions that may work or backfire. All the risks associated with these kinds of procedure must be divulged to you.

Another disturbing practice among some dental professionals is the regular use of intravenous sedation. This is not always necessary and it can lead to other medical problems. General anesthesia may sometimes be administered to children based on the severity of the dental procedure done. However, the majority of patients do not need any form of sedation for routine dentistry.

Bucks County dentists who engage in non-professional practices that are unrelated to his line of expertise should be avoided as well. For example, there are practitioners who actually try to sell dietary supplements to their patients who came in to have a dental procedure done. Those that claim to be experts in “holistic” treatments and specialize in headaches and backaches among others should not be entertained as well.

Unless you trust your Bucks County dentist, it is important to do prior research about your condition before visiting the dentists. Some may recommend the most expensive treatment for the problem even though a lot of alternatives exist. In addition, a certain number might even provide treatments that are downright dangerous or carry unnecessary risks.

If they offer to diagnose neuralgia-inducing cavitational ostenecrosis (NICO), politely turn it down. Any dentist that recommends that removal of teeth that already have root canals or the replacement of amalgam fillings should be avoided as well.

How Most People Choose their Dentist in Bucks County PA

Most people choose their dentist based of the following: (1) location of the office, (2) office hours, (3) payment plans and options, and (4) friendliness of the practitioner. Obviously, people will prefer a Bucks County dentist that is close to their home, office, or children’s school and office hours will play the same role in this regard. On the other hand, cost and payment options are also an essential factor for many.

The services of well-known cosmetic dentistry practitioners, for example, may be expensive. The friendliness of the dentist also determines whether the patient will come back or not. But more than that, the rapport and level of comfort the practitioner provides is important. If he understands your needs and meets your expectations, competence will speak for itself.

• Location – convenience is of primary importance for a majority of dental patients. No one wants to commute for several hours if they can help it. Even if the dentistry clinic is located near your place, always make it a point to arrive on time during scheduled visits.
• Costs and Payment Options – find out whether the clinic accepts your insurance coverage. The payment options offered should also be considered depending on your needs. A lot of dentists accept only cash and credit card payment. However, once you become a regular patient, most of them will also accept personal checks. The frequency of payment (for certain treatments) must also be discussed.
• Personal Preference – do you feel comfortable with the practitioner? The main thing is to be able to ask questions and discuss your symptom in detail. The dentist should pay careful attention when you talk about this. If you feel that he or she isn’t listening, it might be best to seek another practitioner than risk a malpractice. It is also best if you can express your fears and concerns so that these will be addressed immediately.
• Professionalism at Work – aside from the dentist’s educational qualifications and experience, his professionalism at work and even the look of his office will tell you a lot about his style. The dental clinic should be clean and there should be policies on infection control. After the last patient has left, every single tool that was used must be properly cleaned.
• Emergency Care – find out if the dentist can be contacted in times of emergencies. Is he willing to work out of hours or even during the weekend if you need an emergency dentist? And would he take responsibility for anything that goes wrong on your treatment? The dentist you choose should be available when you contact him during an emergency situation.

Find Good Dentists in Your Area

Before looking elsewhere, it makes sense to go to the family Bucks County dentist first to see if he or she has the necessary expertise for the cosmetic dentistry procedure you want. If you don’t know any dental practitioner in the area personally, it might be a good idea to ask for recommendations from friends, family, and acquaintances. The local health professional might also know of a good dentist near your place.

Once you have identified some prospect, try to pay the dentist a visit. It will help you get acquainted and comfortable with the cosmetic dentist. If your personalities match and competence doesn’t seem to be an issue, ask about payment plans and fees. Most cosmetic dentistry practitioners prefer that patients initiate all discussions about finances. When large fees are involved for comprehensive dental work, it is best to ask for a written document stating the fees and payment terms of the procedure.

If you receive even a minor treatment on the first day, judge the dentist’s skills and concern about your well-being. Some questions you should ask yourself include:

• Does the bite feel alright?
• Did the treatment irritate your gums?
• Did the dentist polish your fillings?
• Do you feel pain when you have hot or cold drinks?
• Did the dentist make use of water spray while drilling?
• Does your tooth or dental floss catch on a tooth?
• Is he or she a gentle Bucks County PA dentist?

Be cautions in trusting any dental or even medical professional. Remember that these practitioners are human too and they are susceptible to mistakes as well as greed. There was a reporter once posed as a patient for Reader’s Digest. He visited 50 dental clinics in a number of states. The cost quoted ranged from to 1. The reporter brought his x-ray films and told the dental professionals he had insurance coverage.

The only immediate problem he had, as verified by four dentists prior to the assignment, required one molar filling or crown. Work in another tooth may be recommended as well. Of all the dentists, only 12 had similar findings. 15 of them didn’t notice any problem with the molar tooth. There was one dentists who even said that crowning all the of reporter’s teeth is recommended. It would cost ,440.

Overall, it is important to look at the all-around expertise, qualifications, and personality of the Bucks County dentist. All dental procedures including those involving dental implants should be done in a professional manner. Also take into consideration whether the cosmetic dentist you choose offers emergency dental care when you need it.

Orange County Dentists — How To Get The Perfect Smile

Orange County Dentists — How To Get The Perfect Smile

Smiling — it’s an infectious expression. Subconsciously, when a person smiles at you, you can’t help but smile back. However, so many of us are unhappy with our smiles. While there are at-home treatments that can make your teeth whiter, more comprehensive ways of achieving that perfect smile come only from cosmetic dentists.

There are a handful of Orange County dentists that specialize in cosmetic dentistry, and for more serious mouth problems temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ). Many also offer free consultations to fully discuss with you the right treatment for your mouth, and budget.

Common Smile Treatments

The most common treatments to achieve a perfect smile involve veneers and tooth whitening. Tooth whitening involves a process of lightening the color of the tooth’s enamel. Common methods of tooth whitening include tooth bleaching using peroxide based chemicals, in-office whitening, and laser whitening.

Tooth Whitening

Using loaded tray peroxide based method Orange County Dentists will custom fit a tray to your mouth. They will then fill the tray with the peroxide mix and fix to your gums. Results should be seen after two to three weeks of wearing the tray.

Laser teeth whitening uses a laser to apply the peroxide bleaching agent to the teeth. The laser speeds up the chemical reaction of the bleach, making this process very quick to show results. Most of these procedures are quick and painless. Some Orange County dentists even advertise lunchtime tooth whitening, as some methods take just one hour to see results.

If you do plan to see Orange County dentists for veneers as part of your perfect smile procedure, then it is advisable to embark on tooth whitening before you move onto veneers. Doing this will improve the final result of your smile treatment as you will have a consistent color across all of your teeth.

Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin pieces of porcelain that Orange County dentists bond with teeth. Normally completed within two or three visits, the surfaces of the teeth are first scratched slightly to help the bonding medium adhere to the tooth more firmly. A mold is then taken to ensure that your veneers are the right fit for your teeth.

Once applied, the veneers cover minor imperfections such as chips or cracks in the tooth. Orange County dentists can also use veneers to realign misaligned teeth as an alternative to orthodontic work. While not the cheapest methods of smile perfecting, the results of veneers and teeth whitening can be well worth the cost.

Treating More Serious Mouth Disorders

For some people, fixing the aesthetic problems is not enough to create the perfect smile. Temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ) is a condition that affects the muscles that connect the upper and lower jaws. TMJ can occur because the jaw is misaligned, there is consistent grinding of the teeth, or sometimes stress or arthritis. TMJ Orange County dentists describe the symptoms as pain in the face, neck and sometimes shoulders. Symptoms also include difficulties opening and closing the jaw, pain while chewing or talking and sensitive teeth.

TMJ Orange County specialists will advise on the appropriate treatment for the individual case. Treatments can include orthodontics to realign teeth or adjusting the bite to remove interferences.

Whether it be purely aesthetic or a more specialized treatment, Orange County dentists will find a way to give you the perfect smile.

Dentist Orange County Tips on Dental Insurance Plans

Dentist Orange County Tips on Dental Insurance Plans

Dental insurance has almost the same similarity as health insurance. With monthly premiums, you will get benefits which include regular check ups, cleanings, x-rays and other services that encourage dental health. All plans differ with some giving wider coverage than others while some will require much more financial contribution from you at the time you need the services. Better still some plans will give cover for some types of oral surgery or for dental implants.

Mainly dental insurance company will offer coverage for preventive care like x-rays, checkups and regular cleanings. Many people tend to skip this routine care to save on out of pocket expenses when this coverage is not provided for. To prevent potential dental problems as early as possible, this appointments are really necessary. When an insurance plan covers these scheduled visits, patients are more likely to stick to it and get effective prevention of oral problems.

You will discover that dental insurance is not given such a priority like health insurance and in fact even employers will not always have dental coverage as part of the health plan package. However, anyone who has had work done on their teeth knows how fast the bills can add up.

Other dental insurance plans might also cover certain types of treatments for instance, extractions, cavity fillings and even crowns. Should you be a patient with special dental needs then go ahead and look for dental companies that offer this kind of coverage.

Whether you are unemployed or working for a company that doesn’t provide dental coverage, you may be on the hunt for affordable dental insurance. If you are working for a company that does not give dental coverage, or probably you are unemployed and hunting for an affordable dental insurance. You will not find it easy to research and record the various plans available so as to determine which one best suits you. It can be time consuming too. The more you get the similarities and the differences between companies the more it becomes confusing.

But with just a click of the mouse, you can visit a single website, compare rates, plans and apply for your cover online even if it is family or individual insurance.

If you are looking for something that is good and makes more sense then try discount dental plans.A discount plan is a welcome alternative to dental insurance because it does not have exclusions of pre-existing conditions, any deductibles or co-pays. You will get good discounts on preventive dental care and also major dental work like braces, crowns and dentures.

Just look for a dentist near you who accepts discount plans. You might have to pay for an annual fee to join which is quite low, book for an appointment, say what you want done, get the treatment and pay for the discounted rate after all is finished. You will have saved as much as 60% off the average cost elsewhere.

If you are looking a good dental alternative that will help you save, then get a discount dental plan. In the modern world, everyone looks for ways to save on their dental care.

New Jersey Periodontist Joins The Total Confidence Dentistry Team Of Chester County, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia, PA-NJ  – Our West Chester dental office team welcomes Dr. John Nikas, a periodontal disease specialist with extensive experience in implant dentistry. While he began his career in Pittsburgh after his graduation from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine almost 20 years ago, he recently relocated to the Philadelphia area, where he spends time in our comprehensively focused dental practice and in another office in New Jersey.

Dr. Nikas concentrates on periodontic treatments, which includes gum disease management to prevent its damaging effects on oral health as well as provides reconstructive dentistry when bone deterioration and tooth loss occurs. Unfortunately, neglecting the periodontal system is all too common. As a veteran periodontist, he is dedicated to reversing that negative trend in West Chester and throughout the region.

When there is a need to replace missing teeth, his rehabilitation strategy starts with proper treatment planning. Dental implants are a solution he provides to achieve the comprehensive results our patients expect and, he is able to expertly place them when appropriate. Implants are recommended for different reasons and implemented with various systems including as a healthier alternative to crown and bridge dentistry. Options like implant-supported dentures provide significant benefit compared to traditional adhesive or partial dentures, which are known for slipping countless times and harmfully impacting the diet of the denture wearer.

Dr. Nikas offers our patients an advanced perspective on preventing the problems caused by inattention to this disease and its affects on oral and overall health. By collaborating with our entire team including Dr. Briglia, the director of our Total Confidence Dentistry approach, our hygiene staff and Dr. Schreiber, who focuses on root canal therapy, Dr. Nikas is able to develop comprehensive and effective treatment programs for each patient.

The value of dental implants is substantial with their ability to preserve adjacent teeth and achieve a youthful result in jaw strength, biting confidence, facial appearance and diet variety. That said Dr. Nikas would rather prevent disease than place implants. Too many people are consistently unhealthy because periodontal disease is never fully controlled. There is no way to entirely end its assault but ongoing management and persistent therapies will deter its damaging effects.

According to Dr. Nikas, “Preventing tooth loss is much more affordable than tooth replacement. More importantly, it’s the best approach for a longer and healthier life. While I am excited to restore the health of people who have lost one or many teeth with implant dentistry, I intensely focus my energies on periodontal disease management. Patients as well as their spouses, family and friends deserve a proactive response and assertive plan to avoid the damage caused by oral disease, which can include associated systemic and overall health complications. I am committed to preventing negative outcomes, not just responding to them effectively when they occur.”

Perpetual oral health problems are intrinsically related to other health issues. While direct links in some areas are still being determined, numerous studies provide insight into potential serious problems. For example, a NIH news release updated in 2008 offered this caveat: older adults who have higher proportions of four periodontal-disease-causing bacteria inhabiting their mouths also tend to have thicker carotid arteries, a strong predictor of stroke and heart attack.

More worrisome, dental health data also presented by the NIH showed that 38 percent of the 1,347 men in a 2009 study (averaging 75 years of age) had severe periodontitis. What makes this a dramatic statistic is that the men were highly educated, largely in good to excellent health, most visited the dentist annually, and 37 percent never smoked. Interestingly that low level of smoking should have meant less chronic periodontitis, but the researchers noted a ‘surprisingly high proportion’ of the men had some form of gum disease.

That means the incidence of gum disease in the general population, especially those middle-aged and older, is even more pronounced. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. It is said that 3 out every 4 people who have it do not know it. Seniors alone account for about 12 percent of the population or about 600 thousand people in the Philadelphia MSA. While complete tooth loss (edentulism) has declined by nearly half in the last few decades, about 24% of Pennsylvanians age 65 and above are without any teeth (18th in nation). Of course, gum disease is present and doing its damage for many years before the toll hits this ‘retirement age’ range.

Dr. Nikas provides our patients with oral health strategies to make these periodontal disease and tooth loss statistics irrelevant for our patients. And when needed, he is able to rejuvenate their oral function and boost their smile confidence with dental implants.
