The Effects Poor Fitting Dentures Have on Patients

The Effects Poor Fitting Dentures Have on Patients

As they age, people’s mouth conformation changes, which can be a problem for those who have false teeth. Despite the common misbelieve that denture changes in time, good oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist remain very important contributors to the denture’s good health even at old age.

What are the problems that require the replacement of denture?

The aging process makes the gum ridges to shrink, which is the main cause for loose denture. The supporting bone is also likely to shrink so that the mandible and the maxilla no longer have a proper alignment. This, in fact, is a chain reaction: because of the loose denture sore spots appear in the mouth, and because of that the improper mastication generates stomach problems. Facial features are also obviously modified because of the loose denture.

If this is the case, then the existing denture will no longer fit properly in a patient’s mouth and a visit to the dentist is mandatory. The dentist will either evacuate it to make a new one or reline the existing one so that it can fit. Some of the teeth from the denture become visibly worn out and need to be replaced. Regular dental visits must be included in the patient’s schedule so that everything goes well and the denture stays at its place. Oral cancer is one of the diseases that can be easily avoided in such situations. The dental specialist will establish the frequency of the dental cabinet for each particular case.

How to take care of dentures

It is needless to say that proper hygiene keeps one’s denture and general health in a good state. In order to take care of dentures, people who wear them must brush them with a soft bristled toothbrush so that alimentary residuals are gently removed and the denture does not get scratched or deteriorated. When not in the mouth, dentures must always be kept in water (preferably at the room temperature) or in a special solution for dentures that the dentist recommends. Cleaning the gums and tongue help the patients avoid other possible oral infections.

Dentists use specific materials, exclusively distributed to dental specialists in order to repair deteriorated dentures. Therefore, procuring over-the-counter products will do more harm than good to the patient. Such products contain various harmful chemicals that not only damage the denture, but can cause more severe complications. Adjusting dentures must not be made at home, but by the help of the dental specialist.

Q&A: Those with full dentures – click here !?

Question by Mikey: Those with full dentures – click here !?
I have neglected my teeth for many years and now at age 42 find myself with dental insurance and went to the dentist.
I knew it was bad and I have no else to blame but myself.
I am sure that after a while I will be able to accept it mentally – 42 , and wearing dentures ! Just struggling with being so young and waking up and looking in the mirror at a toothless mouth. :( :( It will take time but I am certain I can get over the mental part of this.
What will life be like with full dentures ?
Will certain foods ( like steak ) still be a problem ?
Are the ” glues ” they have now make it secure and easy to deal with day to day ?
I guess just tell me what it was like when you went through this difficult time and where you are at today …………..
Man you guys are great !!!!
Picking best answer will be hard…….
Thanks for your answers and support :)

I don’t have dentures, but both of my parents have them & I’ve seen their daily struggles, so I can understand your pain in a way. My mom got dentures when she was 40 and she was heartbroken but I think she is pretty much over it now, hopefully since it’s been like 14 years.

Anyways, both of my parents had a hard time at first eating certain foods that they had to chew. I know that it took them probably a month before they could get back to their regular diets. Eating really chewy foods like steaks, and things shouldn’t bug you especially if you’ve had the dentures for sometime.

Yes, the glues are secure. Most of the time, when your dentures first arrive to you, and you wear them, they may not fit correctly – causing you to have to go back and get them shaved or something, make sure you don’t leave the dentist’s office without them being perfectly fitted for your mouth. Otherwise you’ll have to worry about them falling out or being really uncomfortable and too tight.

My dad loves having dentures, he always made me feel better & crack up laughing by making funny faces and doing things with them. Hahaha it sounds stupid, but when you’re like 5 years old it can seriously make your day better.

And don’t be too down about it, eventually they will grow on you, right now just may be the hardest part!!

New Dentures ? The Denture Proces

The ability to get a pair of new dentures is not like shopping for a pair of pants or the latest kitchenware. You cannot simply walk into a dentist office and get a pair of dentures that day. In most cases the denture process is a several day process. While each denture professional has his or her own style of fitting, moulding and placing the dentures. Here is a look at the fairly common process a dental patient will undergo to get a pair of dentures.

Initial Appointment

The dentures process starts out with an initial dental appointment. The dentist or denture professional will sit down with you to discuss the various types of dentures and why you want to make the switch to dentures. The initial visit is very informal and filled with a lot of information. The dentist will go over which types of dentures he or she feels bests fit your needs and will help you best.

The Measurements

After the initial decision has been many for dentures, dental patients will then undergo a series of measurements of the jaw and space between teeth when biting down. An impression of your teeth is also made at the initial visit.

Impression of the mouth

The next step of the process of getting dentures undergone is the impression of your mouth is sent to a lab where the dentures will be made for the patient. The lab will make a wax try on style of dentures which is sent back to the dental office for a quick in office try on. This step usually takes one to two weeks. The dentist will try on the wax mould of the mouth and make any changes that will need to be made. The changes are then sent back to the lab where the final prosthetic device is made.

The final fit

The final step of the process of getting dentures is to have the final in clinic fitting. This visit is where the dentist will show you how to properly place the dentures into your mouth. The dentist will also make sure that the dentures fit properly all around. If the dentures fit you are good to go. However, it should be noted that everyone’s gums change from time to time so there will be a need to come back to the dentist for a refitting and realigning of the dentures.

Summary

You will be ready to wear your new dentures in less than a month. Dentures should last aroudn 7 or more years.

People Are Dying From Their Dentures So Glaxo Comes To Grips With Zinc

People Are Dying From Their Dentures So Glaxo Comes To Grips With Zinc

If you wear dentures or you know someone who does then you might be shocked to learn that you could die from excessive use of denture adhesive creams. Denture adhesive creams are over the counter products that people apply to their dentures before putting them into their mouths. Most denture adhesive creams have zinc in their formulae – and that’s at the root of the problem.

Although trace amounts of zinc are necessary in one’s diet, excessive amounts can be harmful. People who have “problem dentures” often use a substantial amount of these adhesives to help hold their dentures in place. Unbeknownst to them, the more they use the higher their risk of injury or even death.

Chronic and excessive use of denture adhesive creams has been linked by researchers to a condition called hyperzincuria, or zinc poisoning. Hyperzincuria can lead to more serious and permanently disabling injuries including copper depletion (hypocupremia), nerve damage, and even death.

Perhaps because of this, the maker of Poligrip recently announced it will stop using zinc in three of its popular denture creams. The New York Times reported that due to potential health risks associated with the ingredient GlaxoSmithKline will stop making and selling its Super Poligrip Original, Ultra Fresh, and Extra Care products while it develops a zinc-free reformulation.

In a statement, Glaxo calls the move voluntary and says the products are safe to use as directed. However, the company says it is taking the action “because we have become aware of potential health problems associated with the long-term excessive use of our zinc-containing denture adhesive products.”

Against the backdrop of potential personal injury claims, a number of law firms that specialize in personal injury law are urging retailers to remove affected products from their shelves

The Times writes that Glaxo faces a number of personal injury lawsuits alleging claims of nerve damage and other injuries from “high levels of zinc intake from the products.”

Here are Seven Symptoms of Neuropathy (Nerve Damage):

1. Loss of sensation, numbness or tingling in the extremities

2. Unexplained weakness or pain in the extremities

3. Loss of ability to move legs, feet, arms, or hands

4. Poor balance and coordination, decrease in walking stride

5. Abnormal blood pressure and heart rate

6. Reduced ability to perspire, constipation and bladder dysfunction (urinary incontinence)

7. Loss of cognitive function

If you are suffering from any of these symptoms please see your medical practitioner as soon as possible. And, if you upon diagnosis it has been determined that you do have a neuropathic condition, then you may be entitled to personal injury compensation.

Sokolove Law’s clients have been awarded more than a billion dollars in damages for all types of personal injury cases. To find out how to make the system work for you and to get the personal injury compensation you want and deserve, go to => http://www.sokolovelaw.com/ now.

Dentures for you

Dentures for you

Dentures refer to a removable replacement for missing teeth. Dentures resemble your natural teeth in appearance and helps in improving your smile and facial beauty There are essentially two types of available dentures namely; Complete and Partial Dentures.

Complete Dentures

Complete Dentures could be categorized as Conventional or Immediate. A Conventional Denture is made after the teeth have been completely removed and the gum tissue has started to heal. A Conventional Denture could be placed in the mouth about 8 to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed.

Immediate Dentures are prepared in advance and could be placed as soon as the teeth are removed. However, a major problem with Immediate Dentures is that bones and gums tend to shrink in course of time, especially during the healing period subsequent to tooth removal. As a result, a great disadvantage of Immediate Dentures is that they need more adjustments so as to fit properly during the healing period.

Partial Dentures

A Partial Denture or Bridge generally comprises replacement teeth connected to a pink or gum-colored plastic base, which is further attached by metal framework that keeps the denture in place in the mouth. Partial Dentures are often used when one or more natural teeth still remain in the upper or lower jaw. A fixed bridge substitutes one or more teeth by placing crowns on the teeth on either side of the space and joining artificial teeth to them. The Bridge is then fixed into place. A Precision Partial Denture could be removed if required and contains internal attachments that connect to the adjacent crowns.

Some things to remember

Speaking and eating may be a little awkward when you are wearing dentures. Eating with new dentures needs a little practice and it may be pretty disturbing for a few weeks.

Always be careful while consuming hot or hard foods and foods that contain sharp bones or shells.
Try to avoid foods that are too sticky or hard.
Avoid chewing gum while you are getting adjusted to the denture.
Do not use toothpicks while you are wearing dentures.

DENTAL IMPLANTS: Dental Implants Vs Dentures – Which Is Better?

DENTAL IMPLANTS: Dental Implants Vs Dentures – Which Is Better?

Whilst the loss of a tooth can inhibit our ability to not only function properly when eating, drinking and speaking, it can also cause us to lose our self-confidence and become withdrawn and uncomfortable. As a range of treatments now offers us a choice in how to overcome these problems, we are left to decide which methods might suit us best.

Where tooth loss can be combated using either a dental implant or dentures, the decision between which to choose can be a difficult one.

Dental implant procedures provide you with a permanent solution to the problem of a lost tooth or teeth, with a recreated tooth effectively replacing your missing teeth. A fully functional device, the dental implant can be created to replicate your remaining teeth, looking and feeling completely natural, whilst helping to prevent further problems in decay and deterioration for the remainder of your mouth and gums.

Your dental implants dentist can offer you a variety of options to equip you with the strength and support that you need from your dental tooth implants, including titanium implants and mini implants for minimum impact or interference. Your overall health and vitality is greatly improved as a result of dental implant surgery with your dietary range increasing, allowing you to eat the foods you want without pain and irritation. Palatability is also improved as the need for distasteful adhesives, used with some dentures, is eliminated and the interference of a plastic covering across the roof of your mouth is removed.

While dentures offer an elegant solution for those people suffering from a severe loss of underlying bone structure, dental implants provide patients with a more stable, secure and comfortable alternative. Although dental implants can incur greater initial cost, the improvements in strength greatly increase within the mouth, allowing for greater chewing ability and ease of fluent speech. What natural bone remains can be preserved with greater efficiency and therefore increase the overall support of your facial muscles and tissue and is therefore often considered to be the most efficient and beneficial investment where tooth loss is concerned.

Incomplete dentures are utilised when one or additional missing teeth are in either the upper or decrease dental arch. Partial dentures use either metal or ceramic clasps to anchor onto the remaining teeth for stability.

Managing with Dentures

Bearing dentures for that initial time entails a number of adjustments to your lifestyle for your initial few months of use. Choosing food that’s soft and very easily masticated is encouraged until you might be comfy with the denture.

Since of how dentures are built, language may perhaps be unnatural for that 1st few weeks of wear. In case you are encountering troubles with pronunciation, try reading the newspaper loudly to exercise your oral communication. The Weston dentist will double check your bone and gums to see if they shrink after a while, especially within the very first six months after the extraction with the enamel. This could make your Weston dentures to get loose, making them to snap jointly when speaking or eating, slip off the arch throughout activity, or if seriously loose, come out of your mouth. A reline can be a method that remolds the denture to your dental arch by adding more acrylic substance to the denture. Your Weston dental professional will have the ability to fix that at his or her Weston office.

Dentures which might be newly fabricated or have been relined will necessitate modifications made by the Weston dentist or Weston denturist.
