To Root Canal Or Not To Root Canal…That Is The Question!
Someone asked Dr.Mariana Conant’s 1305dental.com a question about the difference between a regular dentist and a holistic one. She had heard conflicting opinions about root canals. Whether you are in Fairfield, CT or not, you might also be curious about the holistic dentist answer!
A holistic dentist, is actually a dentist who happens to follow
less invasive dental methods and techniques. It isn’t
really a “natural” kind of dentistry, but they are more geared to letting
the human body heal itself.
The problem with a root canal is this: A tooth contains actual living matter
inside, including a nerve and a vein and an artery that feed the
tooth and keep it alive. Sometimes, people get an infection in there.
Remember what the dirtiest part of the body is…and it’s not where you think! It’s in the mouth!
When we have gum disease or any type of infection, sometimes it
gets in there and messes up what’s inside the tooth. Then we get some serious pain and discomfort and there are several possibilities.
The body will mount a full scale immune response and
eventually it will kill the living matter in there, which is called the “pulp” of the tooth. To save itself, the tooth must get rid of the infection, or the tooth will die.
This is very painful and can cause infection throughout
the body in some cases, or the body will heal itself and the infection will subside.
Currently, dentists do not see this outcome very much often, and it is possible that with holistic methods, a tooth could be saved that otherwise would be lost.
By the way…please feel free to share this ArticlesBase.com piece with someone you know who might need it!
However, when Fairfield, Connecticut Dentist Mariana Conant wants to save a tooth,
she will probably suggest a root canal and that is the standard form of care.
She told us that a root canal involves drilling a hole into the tooth and then
removing all of the infected living pulp inside there. Then the tooth is hollow so the she fills it up with a substance similar to rubber but one that the body will tolerate.
Then this tooth needs to have, what is called a crown, put on it,
because for one thing, it has a hole in it, and another thing…it will
get weak and brittle if it does not have a crown. Remember that it no longer has living matter inside keeping it healthy, so it won’t do well in the long run without a lab-built crown put on it to protect it.
So root canals involve getting a crown as well. This is not an inexpensive proposition, and root canals are not always easy to do. Teeth have several roots, and the dentist really has to make certain that the infection is completely removed from each of them.
This is a painstaking procedure that many dentists do not enjoy doing.
Is it painful to the patient? Not really, because you will be quite numb. You
may also be given a sedative and if you have a dentist who uses sedation,
then you won’t remember a thing when it is over.
The problem lies in getting rid of all of the infection. It is very difficult. There are microscopic tunnels in the roots of the teeth, and they actually go on for miles
and miles. The human body is amazing, isn’t it?
So, Dr. Conant said that getting all of the bacteria in those miles of tunnels
to die off before sealing up the tooth — “it’s pretty hard work!” Also keep in mind…”You get what you pay for.”
Fairfield’s Gentle Dentist, as she is known, suggests that you ask what type of sterilization your dentist is thinking of doing in the root. There are some dentists
who do nothing, and there are some who hollow out the
tooth and then do their best to sterilize or seal up those tunnels.
You might even want to do what I do, which is
to opt for removing the tooth and getting an implant
instead. That way, I don’t have a dead tooth in my
mouth.
It’s not standard, but I prefer that route. As for others,
if the dentist is careful about the root canal, and if
there are adequate sterilization procedures, then it
can be perfectly fine.
