Why is it that so many people ‘defend’ dentists and orthodontists from ever possibly doing anything wrong?

Question by Anonymous: Why is it that so many people ‘defend’ dentists and orthodontists from ever possibly doing anything wrong?
I see a constantly increasing trend nowadays where a dentist screws up somehow, the patient gets mad and then other people that the patient talks to say that the patient “shouldn’t blame the dentist” because of this and that reason.

So, with that being said. I went to my general dentist a while back, when I felt that I was in a better position to fix my crooked teeth that I had since I was a little child. I knew the dentist that I went to couldn’t put braces or anything on, but I went for a general cleaning and for a couple of fillings. When he learned I was interested in ortho, of course, they let out a “Great!!” as if they were going to get paid for something. He gave me a couple of local area orthodontists. The orthodontist went through all of this rant for about 30 minutes. He put down celebrities, bashed on how x celebrity is missing teeth, went through the typical Jay Leno conversation and even dared to compare my case to Jay Leno…which it is not anywhere close to that. With another family member in the room with me, this crazy orthodontist told me that I would need to have about a month off from work (I don’t think even he could do that, himself – NO company will let you do that), wanted me to get metal braces, spend a week in the hospital so they could break my jaw and do this and that. Why? All because I have a tiny little difference between my bottom jaw and top jaw. The bottom jaw is slightly more pronounced than the top. So I basically have a slight prognathism/cross-bite. When the orthodontist told me that I would be buying a “basically be buying mini Lexus”…I never returned to his office to go beyond the basic consultation. Of course, he said, “The only person who I know of who does that kind of procedure is a friend of mine that I went to Emory University with…”

I’ve noticed that doctors, dentists and orthodontists seem to “stick together” and recommend their friends from school, claiming that there is no one else. I called my general dentist who referred me to that fruitcake orthodontist, and he actually agreed with the orthodontist. I asked if there was ANY other alternative to the jaw surgery/metal braces, and he said there wasn’t. The dentist sent me the information of other orthodontists, because he said “that would hopefully make me feel better about getting the procedure.”

What I did, instead, was consult with a local dental center that does Invisalign and cosmetic dentistry. Something the orthodontist didn’t tell me about, because he doesn’t even do that and of course he wanted my money to put metal braces on at his office only…apparently with a little spiff by recommending his ‘friend’ from his former college. Surprise…the new general dentist/cosmetic dentist at the dental center said that yes, I did qualify for Invisalign. I got my impressions, and will have them back in a matter of weeks.

Why is it that dentists and orthodontists are such liars and cover up for one another on a frequent basis? I feel like I’m going to a car garage when I go to some of them…you ask for an oil change and they look around and find every freaking OTHER problem…and they shouldn’t have even had their nose looking for such a thing when it’s not what you asked. I do not feel this way with my current dentist, now…and my teeth will be straight in 2 years or less, via trays that I can remove to brush and floss…and my jaws will not be cut up by metal. But I think of all of the countless people who are told by orthodontists that they need metal braces, and the orthodontists seem to be refusing to learn anything about Invisalign, so that they can keep their business discreet and lie to people that metal braces are the only way.

Yet someone will reply to this with some fake, cop-out answer as to why the orthodontist and dentist stuck up for one another. Why do people ‘defend’ such people? The common answer to such a question is, “They went to school for x years to get a medical degree, so they know what they are talking about and you should listen to them.” Apparently they didn’t. I didn’t go to college after high school and I have worked my way up in life, and I had the smarts to realize they were full of it, college degree or not.
…and pardon the sentence typo, it won’t let me edit that.
Pickle – The Invisalign dentist is able to compensate discrepancies and adjust the teeth so that those discrepancies are least visible. Again, I do NOT have a massive case. It is barely noticeable as-in, apart from the teeth themselves being crooked.

Why dont you do all the ortho yourself. You obviously know all about it. Bet you end up with nice straight teeth, and a massive jaw discprenancy, cos your amazing invisilign orthodontist is just going for a quick fix and a fast buck

If you are looking for a more natural result from your cosmetic dentistry then a dental bridge might be an answer. From past couple of years, teeth whitening have become very popular and most of the people take help from it to improve their appearance. Things like drinking coffee and smoking can tarnish your teeth which spoil your nice smile and make your physical appearance dowdy.

Dental implants provide cosmetic dentistry patients with a long-lasting solution for replacing missing teeth. Teeth can be whitened and crooked teeth can be straightened. Cosmetic dentistry is relatively new and has been taking the world by storm for the past ten years.

Porcelain veneers and caps. These are far more natural looking than metal fillings and are particularly good for teeth at the front of the mouth, where they are visible. The procedure requires some sanding of the teeth and a wait of up to a couple of weeks for the proper fitting caps to be sent back. They can correct crooked, cracked teeth or even those that have gaps between them. This technique is also good if you can`t whiten your teeth by normal means.
